NHL Period Betting Explained: First, Second and Third Period Bets

A hockey game is three short games stitched together, and each one has its own rhythm. The first period is cautious, the second is loose, and the third gets bent by the goalie pull. Period betting lets you price each one separately. Here is how those markets work and where goals really arrived in 2025-26.

What a period bet is

A period bet is settled on one 20-minute period and ignores everything else. Most US sportsbooks offer the same core markets for each of the three periods: a moneyline, usually in a three-way form that includes the tie, a -0.5 and +0.5 puck line, and a goal total, typically 0.5 or 1.5. Many add team totals for the period, “both teams to score” and a “goal in the first ten minutes” prop.

NHL period betting has two real attractions. It isolates a piece of the game you may have a view on, such as a team that starts fast at home. And it removes the late-game chaos, so a first period bet is settled long before anyone pulls a goalie. The cost is a smaller sample and, at most books, a wider margin than the full-game line.

First period bets: the cleanest read

The first period is where the starting goalies and the coaches' game plans meet before anything has gone wrong. It is also the lowest-scoring period: 1.756 goals per game in 2025-26, and 17.7% of first periods ended without a goal. Put the other way, a first period over 0.5 cashed 82.3% of the time.

The first period three-way line is decided by period score only, and ties are common. 35.4% of 2025-26 games were level after 20 minutes, which is why the tie on a first period three-way line is often priced shorter than either team. When it is not, it is worth a look.

Team tendencies are real but small. Carolina Hurricanes scored 1.18 first-period goals per game, the most in the league, against 0.60 for Detroit Red Wings. Check who is in net on the starting goalies board: a backup starting the first period is the cleanest single reason a period total moves.

Second period: the long change

In the second period each team defends the end farther from its own bench, so players have a longer skate on every line change. Tired skaters get caught on the ice, breakaways come off bad changes, and scoring rises: 2.088 goals per game in 2025-26, against 1.756 in the first. Only 10.5% of second periods were scoreless.

That makes the second period the friendliest for overs and the hardest for teams that rely on structure. A team that defends well but changes slowly can look very different here. One caution: by the second period the game state already matters. A team up two goals after one plays a different second period from a team down two, which is why second period lines are often posted as live markets once the first ends.

Third period and the empty net

The third period scored the most in 2025-26 at 2.161 goals per game. Some of that is fatigue and some is score effects, with trailing teams pressing. A large share is the empty net: the league averaged 0.387 empty-net goals a game, which is about 18% of third-period scoring if you treat every one as a third-period goal, and nearly all of them are.

Third period bets therefore depend heavily on the score going in. A tied game in the third often plays tight, with both teams happy to take a point to overtime. A one-goal game turns wild in the last three minutes. Vegas Golden Knights scored 42.2% of its regulation goals in the third, the highest share in the league, a profile that fits a team either chasing a lot or closing games out.

Late goals cut both ways

The goalie pull raises the chance of a late empty-net goal and the chance of a late tying goal at the same time. For a third period over, both help. For a third period moneyline on the leader, only one does.

How each period market settles

  1. Period moneyline

Two-way versions refund or void a tied period at some books and grade it a loss at others; three-way versions include the tie as an outcome. The market name tells you which one you have.

  2. Period puck line

-0.5 needs the team to win the period. +0.5 wins on a tied period or a period win. No pushes.

  3. Period total

Only goals scored in that period count. Overtime is not part of the third period.

  4. Abandoned games

A period that was completed before a stoppage usually stands. Rules on unfinished periods differ, so read the house rules.

The score after each period also feeds the in-game markets on our live hockey betting guide, and the full-game equivalents are on the puck line and over/under pages. Before betting tonight's games, the tonight board lists every matchup with goalie and rest context, and the power rankings show which teams are trending.

A period market has a fifth of the scoring of a full game, so a team's period averages swing a lot from month to month. A season of numbers is a sensible baseline. A ten-game streak of fast starts mostly is not.

Questions & answers

Questions,
answered.

Short answers to the questions readers ask most.

What is a first period bet in hockey?

It is a wager settled on the first 20 minutes only. The usual markets are a first period moneyline (often three-way, with the tie), a puck line at -0.5 or +0.5, and a total, most often 1.5 goals. In 2025-26, 35.4% of first periods ended level, and 17.7% ended 0-0.

Does overtime count for third period bets?

Normally no. A third period bet covers the 20 minutes of the third period only, and overtime is treated as its own segment. A goal scored in overtime does not count toward a third period total or a third period result. A few books phrase this differently for live markets, so check the house rules when the game is close late.

Which period has the most goals?

The third, in most seasons. In 2025-26, NHL games averaged 2.161 goals in the third period, 2.088 in the second and 1.756 in the first. Empty-net goals are a big reason: trailing teams pull the goalie late, and the leading team often scores into the open net. The second period benefits from the long change.

What does a three-way period line mean?

It offers three outcomes for that period: home team scores more, away team scores more, or the period ends with equal goals. Only goals in that period count, so a period can be tied 1-1 even if one team leads the game. Because ties are common in a 20-minute window, the tie price is usually short compared with a full-game three-way line.

What does -0.5 mean in a period bet?

A -0.5 period puck line means the team has to win that period by at least one goal. It works exactly like a two-way period moneyline with no tie option: a tied period is a loss for the -0.5 side and a win for the +0.5 side. That makes +0.5 attractive when tied periods are frequent, which the price normally reflects.

Can I parlay period bets with full-game bets?

Many US sportsbooks allow it, though some block combinations they consider correlated, such as a first period over with a full-game over in the same game. Same-game parlays are priced with that correlation in mind, so the payout is usually lower than multiplying the legs. A parlay calculator shows the uncorrelated price for comparison.
